2015 Cambridge Scholars Program

This year Scholar Development, with funding provided by The Lew Wentz Foundation, took 16 students on an adventure to "Discover Dickens's England" led by Professor Jeffrey Walker of the English Dept. that ranged from the northern Yorkshire Dales to the heart of London.

As in years past, Magdalene College, University of Cambridge served as homebase for the two-week program that involved six hours of stimulating class discussion each day while still leaving time to take advantage of the culturally rich City of Cambridge's many museums, galleries, historical buildings and cosmopolitan culture.

After the first day of class, St. John's College served a traditional formal dinner for the group in The Wordsworth Room--formally William Wordsworth's bedroom.  And everyone enjoyed a brilliant performance of Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor in the Fellows Gardens of King's College.

Venturing from their lodgings at beautiful Magdalene College, these literary explorers followed Dickens's footsteps to Barnard Castle and Bowes, where Charles Dickens had previously investigated the deplorabe conditions of the notorious Yorkshire boarding schools that he later narrated in Nicholas Nickleby.

In London, these Cambridge Scholars visited the Dickens Museum and learned about the plight of orphans in Victorian England at The Foundling Museum.  Stops at The British Museum and The Tate Modern rounded out the cultural experience of these scholars' visit to London.

On the final full-day of class, these scholars performed original stage adaptations they composed from scenes in Dickens's Nicholas Nickleby in the inspiring Bateman Auditorium at Gonville and Cauis College:

Smike's Speech - Adapted from Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens

Mrs. Nickleby's Blindness - Adapted from Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
